In a new format: pay-for-view! o_O
How it works:
I’ll be posting works in progress in chunks on the site. Readers pay the itsy bitsy fee of ten cents per part to unlock them for their reading pleasure.
Readers have the choice of the following payment options: TinyPass, Amazon Payments, PayPal, Google Checkout, or credit card. You will have to open a TinyPass account to read the unlocked content. (Please note that I do not collect any payment information on the site!)
Each part a reader chooses to unlock stays unlocked for him or her until the story is completed and removed from the site. A removal date will be given so that everyone reading finishes before that happens. Yes, I will extend that date if necessary by readers’ request.
Readers who register on Midnight Intentions will receive a Smashwords coupon code for each title I publish as an ebook. The coupon codes will range from free to discounted cover price, based on the monetary support each story receives.
Why did I go this route?
I’ve tried the web fiction one, and despite the fact a few thousand people were regularly visiting the site, only a few commented (or subscribed, registered, or tipped). I guess I’m a needy writer, because feedback in some form has always caused me to write faster and more consistently.
Also, publishing ebooks costs money (I say that all the time, but that’s because it’s true). While my book sales are steadily growing, they’re not yet to the point of covering business expenses. If I want to keep releasing new titles on a consistent basis, I have to earn more funds for those expenses.
My goals for Midnight Intentions are to complete all the WIP stories I have, and earn some funds towards paying expenses like professional editing for them.
Plus, with the recent crapadoodle turning a lot of people off using PayPal, I wanted to offer other options without having to figure out some really clunky and hard for people to use system.
Fair warnings:
The stories posted to Midnight Intentions are not pro edited. However, I do try to polish things up before posting them, so they shouldn’t totally suck.
TinyPass will ask for a minimum $2.00 first payment, which will be credited so that you can use it wherever TinyPass is used. I chose TinyPass because it offers that variety of payment methods and allows me to set such a low price of ten cents.
I will concentrate on the story that is receiving the most support, so if you have a favorite, please tell your friends about it and give it a boot upward.
If you don’t register on Midnight Intentions, I won’t have your email address to send the coupon codes to. So registering is required for commenting and receiving the free/discounted finished goodies.
What do I expect to happen?
Honestly, not much. I suspect a few of my long time readers will choose to support the stories on Midnight Intentions, but probably not many will, either due to lack of interest or not wanting to open a TinyPass account.
The site will offer a little bit of community building, at least for registered readers who comment (and me!). By the way, I don’t write by committee, but I do love comments and pay attention to well-meant constructive criticism.
Frankly, any kind of feedback is useful (cough*encouraging*cough) to me, whether it’s people dropping a single dime to try out the first part of a story, continually dropping dimes to support a story until it’s completed, or commenting.
If it works beyond your expectations?
Well then, I might start adding works in progress from my urban fantasy series, Discord Jones and Shadow Connor.
Is anything posted now?
Yes, I’ve gotten seven different stories on there, with 2-8 parts already available. So click on over and check Midnight Intentions out.
Thanks for reading!
